I have amazing news for the gazillions of people who’ve told me I should write a book. I HAVE WRITTEN A BOOK. And it’s going to be published. Coming in Spring 2017 to a bookstore near you:
The Place of Peace and Crickets: how adoption, heartache, and love built a family
Is that the best title ever or what? I could tell you what it means, but then I’d have to kill you. KIDDING. But really. I’m not going to tell you because I want you to buy the book and read it to find out. I’ll tell you instead about the
two working titles of the book, which hopefully will tempt you like the smell of brownies baking. The first was My 
Vietmala Family – get it? A combo of Vietnam and Guatemala? Where my kids were born? No good. But it helped me get started. The second was Journey to Now – because it’s a story of how Hot Firefighter Husband and I went from being an enviable hipster couple with a BMW and plans to travel Italy to a family of five with three dogs, a tiny house, and plans to go to the grocery.
Next you want to know who’s publishing it, because you’re wondering whether I just sent the file to the nearest Kinko’s and had it bound into a spiral notebook. I DID NOT. Here’s what happened.
A couple of years ago, my blog caught the eye of the fabulous Joan Leggitt, founder and publisher of Twisted Road Publications. Joan and I had lunch, and she said that if I wrote a manuscript, she’d be interested in reading it. After much angst and self-pity, and some eye-rolling and prodding by Husband, I put one word in front of the other, over and over again, until months and months later, I wrote THE END and sent the resulting mess to Joan.
But Joan didn’t think it was a mess at all, and after several revisions, lots of talking, and me thinking I might die from excitement, Joan purchased my manuscript and is working RIGHT THIS MINUTE to transform it into a book YOU CAN ACTUALLY BUY. Yesterday she announced the book’s release on her website, and suddenly I am preparing my Fresh Air with Terry Gross voice. You know, just in case.
So prepare yourself. In the coming months, I will frequently use the phrases my book and my publisher and launch date and WHEEEEE! just because this is all so fuggetaboutit cool. You can help by indulging me, by purchasing my book when it’s available, and by spreading the word to everyone you know, including famous people like Oprah, Elizabeth Gilbert, and the Dalai Lama.
Oh, and BONUS!! This Tuesday, June 21, I will be reading an excerpt from MY BOOK at an event called Pecha Kucha in St. Augustine, which is like a speakeasy but with beer and wine. I’d love to see you there, and will be doling out free cheek kisses.
